Which NFC tags can iPhone read?

NFC is an under-appreciated method for triggering iPhone actions. It's a shame because they're inexpensive and, once configured, easy to use.

However, there are a few different types of NFC tags, and iPhone can't read them all. It's surprisingly difficult to find the specification for which tags are compatible.

As of iPhone 18, you can use HF NFC 13.56 MHz tags. iPhone can't read UHF RFID ISO 1800-6C tags.

I learned this the hard way.

Unfortunately, this means that iPhone isn't compatible with so-called "long range" NFC tags. However, if you want a tag that is readable from a few inches, you can use a keycard style tag which has a larger antenna. These are the ones that I use.
